Athletics: Football Team on a Roll
With an 8-3 season record, the IC football team clinched its 37th consecutive winning season.
It was the second-longest active winning stretch at any level of U.S. college football (Linfield College hit its 52nd winning season this year). Ithaca’s 40-17 Cortaca Jug victory at home over rival Cortland earned the team its 16th spot in the NCAA playoffs, where it went down 42-18 in the opening round to top-ranked Mount Union College.
Ithaca led Division III in punt returns (18.06 yards per return), with Jason Chier ’09 posting the division’s highest individual average (20.4 yards per return). He became just the second Ithacan to ever lead the nation; all-American Matt Buddenhagen ’99 led the division in punt returns in 1998, when Ithaca also won the team punt return title. The team now holds four NCAA statistical championships; it led the nation in total offense in 1974 and in rushing offense in 1978.
