Ithaca College is hosting the first annual "Where Sullivan-Clinton Meets Iroquoia" workshop and conference. On Oct. 9th from noon to 4:00 p.m. in Textor 103, there will be an afternoon of panels, presentations, and discussions geared to local school teachers, historians, Native American scholars, and interested citizens to learn more about what many consider New York's seminal historic event -- the destruction of 43 Native American settlements by the Continental Army in 1779.

The Sullivan-Clinton campaign devastated native communities throughout the Finger Lakes, including Ithaca, and forever changed the character of our region. This major event has been misrepresented (as you can see in the many historic markers around Cayuga Lake), misinterpreted, and in many cases rendered invisible. Haudenosaunee people still talk about the lasting effects this event has had on the survival of their people and cultures. Teachers will especially benefit by being introduced to the new website on Sullivan-Clinton created by Bob Spiegelman.
