Submitted on behalf of Carl Sgrecci, vice president for finance and administration.

I regret to inform the campus community that John Galt, our recently retired director of the budget, has died after a very brief battle with cancer.

John was a U.S. Navy veteran and came to Ithaca College as a transfer student after attending TC3. He was one of my first students when I was a member of the faculty, and he graduated from the College with a degree in accounting in 1974. He transitioned from college student to college employee even before he graduated, becoming the College's staff accountant in July 1973.

I joined him in the administration in 1975, and we enjoyed a close working relationship for the next 32 years, until he retired to North Carolina in December 2007. John was promoted to chief accountant in 1975, assistant controller in 1979, and budget director in 1980. John also taught accounting courses as a part-time lecturer in the School of Business throughout his employment with the College. John's pencil was always sharp, and he was a very hard worker.

I cherished our time together as a friend, colleague, and confidante. He was the College's financial rudder through good times and bad. We will miss his quick wit and keen sense of humor, but remain forever grateful for all he did for his alma mater.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to John's wife, Lorreen, his son Tim, daughter Katie, and their families. Those wishing to express their condolences to Lorreen may do so at: 101 J.T. Buck Lane, Chocowinity, NC 27817. There will be a memorial service on campus at a later date. As details become available, we will keep the campus informed.
