Submitted on behalf of Carl Sgrecci, vice president for finance and administration.

I regret to inform the campus community that John Galt, our recently retired director of the budget, has died after a very brief battle with cancer.

John was a U.S. Navy veteran and came to Ithaca College as a transfer student after attending TC3. He was one of my first students when I was a member of the faculty, and he graduated from the College with a degree in accounting in 1974. He transitioned from college student to college employee even before he graduated, becoming the College's staff accountant in July 1973.

I joined him in the administration in 1975, and we enjoyed a close working relationship for the next 32 years, until he retired to North Carolina in December 2007. John was promoted to chief accountant in 1975, assistant controller in 1979, and budget director in 1980. John also taught accounting courses as a part-time lecturer in the School of Business throughout his employment with the College. John's pencil was always sharp, and he was a very hard worker.

I cherished our time together as a friend, colleague, and confidante. He was the College's financial rudder through good times and bad. We will miss his quick wit and keen sense of humor, but remain forever grateful for all he did for his alma mater.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to John's wife, Lorreen, his son Tim, daughter Katie, and their families. Those wishing to express their condolences to Lorreen may do so at: 101 J.T. Buck Lane, Chocowinity, NC 27817. There will be a memorial service on campus at a later date. As details become available, we will keep the campus informed.

"A person will be called to account on Judgment Day for every permissible thing he might have enjoyed but did not." Talmud

Not to worry about our dear John-He is an example to me of loving life and all it presented, and will have a perfect score card, having made a point, I'm certain, of enjoying every permissible thing.

John lived life to the fullest, was devoted to Lorreen and his family, and also to those he befriended.

I will celebrate knowing him, being mentored by him, laughing with him, and shouting with him. He has been taken too soon. He will be most deeply missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of someone so vital not only to the College, but to so many of us who worked with him for so many years. John was truly one of a kind...hard working, fiercely loyal to his alma mater, creative, honest and a true friend. John's unbeatable sense of humor was second to none, and I have so many memories of the "good ol' days"! I will miss John...prayers and blessings to Loreen, Tim, and Katie, and a big THANKS to John for all that he did for Ithaca. Rest well, John.

John was such a great guy. The work always got done, but with him it was fun. He had a keen wit and with Halloween approaching I remember him dressing up in costume. He certainly knew numbers and his insights help guide IC through some tough times. My prayers go out to Loreen and the rest of John's family. If God needs a budget director, you can be sure John's there balancing the books! Rest well, John.

I am very saddened to hear of John's passing. My memories of John go way beyond IC. I have many, many fond childhood memories of spending time at the Galt's house, next door to my parents on the Gunderman Rd. Katie and I were inseperable. I will never forget his comforting ways, his smile and his sense of humor. Rest peacefully John. We will be neighbors again someday. All my love to Lorreen, Tim, and Katie and their families.

Nowhere is it written that life is fair. You worked hard for many years and deserved more than the brief respite that you had. I will think of you often and will certainly remember the many good times that we had together both on and off the job. Rest in peace my friend.

John was very near the 'top of the food chain' and I was very near the bottom when I began working in Alumni Hall 17-some years ago...and yet, his phone line was always open and he always treated me and my year-end budget panic-attacks with the respect, (often irreverent) humor, and patience of an old, dear, friend.

I am saddened that he was taken so early, so quickly. His energy and wit will be missed by the world at large, by his cohorts and colleagues at IC, and, I'm sure, by his new friends and neighbors in North Carolina.

Lorreen, Kate, and Tim, I am so very sorry for the loss of your amazing husband, father, and friend.

God speed, John.
