On April 25th at 7pm, The History Center will present a public program featuring Ithaca College students on local environmental history. The event showcases students' research on relevant subjects. This year's projects include a look at the role of coal in the local economy over time, 1935 flood, and an environmental history of The Commons. This event is free and open to the public.
The students featured on the program have been guided by Michael Smith, associate professor of History & Environmental Studies at Ithaca College, and History Center staff. Prof. Smith's course, History of American Environmental Thought, seeks to impart a sense of "ecological citizenship," and an understanding of "community in the broader sense--beyond the human connection." Students in this course work with the staff at the History Center to utilize primary source material in the Center's archives as well as conduct additional research to understand more about a significant environmental occurrence in our region's history. A question and answer period will follow student presentations.
