Event to begin with a faculty performance of the original Nicholas Walker composition "Summer Thing"
On Wednesday, Sept. 4, Dean Karl Paulnack will lead the School of Music Convocation with a discussion titled "Bridges and Barriers," exploring the bridges--and the barriers--that we build in order to carry music in the world. Intended for all Music majors, but open to the entire campus community, Convocation will begin at 10 a.m. in Ford Hall, within the Whalen Center for Music.
Commenting on the theme of the discussion, Paulnack explained, "Musicians have the ability to build bridges that overcome differences, reactivate damaged brain pathways, and facilitate communication and connection. Paradoxically, we cannot build those bridges without also building barriers; in the course of our work, we need both."
Kicking off the Convocation, four School of Music faculty members will give a special collaborative performance of "Summer Thing," an original composition by associate professor of performance studies Nicholas Walker. The arrangement will feature Walker (bass) and fellow School of Music faculty members Frank Campos (trumpet), Greg Evans (Drums), and Mike Titlebaum (sax).
Note for Music Students: School of Music Convocations are designed to bring together all music majors at Ithaca College. Music students can receive recital attendance credit for this event, but must pick up their recital attendance cards in the music office before the convocation.
Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the School of Music at 607-274-3717. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
