School of Music Convocation to explore "Bridges & Barriers" of musicianship, presented by new Dean Karl PaulnackContributed by Jenny Stockdale on 09/03/13 Event to begin with a faculty performance of the original Nicholas Walker composition "Summer Thing" Commenting on the theme of the discussion, Paulnack explained, "Musicians have the ability to build bridges that overcome differences, reactivate damaged brain pathways, and facilitate communication and connection. Paradoxically, we cannot build those bridges without also building barriers; in the course of our work, we need both." Kicking off the Convocation, four School of Music faculty members will give a special collaborative performance of "Summer Thing," an original composition by associate professor of performance studies Nicholas Walker. The arrangement will feature Walker (bass) and fellow School of Music faculty members Frank Campos (trumpet), Greg Evans (Drums), and Mike Titlebaum (sax).
