As the Ithaca College community continues to mourn and police continue to investigate the Aug. 28 murder of Anthony Nazaire ’19 on the Cornell University campus, local authorities are searching for suspects in an unrelated stabbing that took place near Cornell on Wednesday night.
The college issued a Public Safety Alert following this latest incident, in which a person not affiliated with either Cornell or Ithaca College received a knife wound to the leg. The victim was transported to an area hospital, and is expected to recover.
The Ithaca Police Department (IPD) says that it does not believe that the two incidents are related. According to Chief of Police John Barber, investigators have also determined that the Wednesday stabbing was not a random act of violence, and that the victim and the suspects knew each other.
Ithaca College recognizes, however, that members of our campus community may be in a heightened state of both awareness and anxiety as a result of these crimes.
The Office of Public Safety (OPS) has increased its patrols and its visibility on campus. Anyone who has concerns about their safety and security is encouraged to contact OPS at 607-274-3333.
The IPD investigation into Anthony’s death is still very active, and is being supported by personnel from other law enforcement agencies, including the Ithaca College Office of Public Safety, Cornell University Police Department, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police. We continue to urge anyone who may have information to contact IPD at 607-697-0333.
Any updates on these investigations will be posted on the Ithaca College website.
