As you’re heading home soon for Spring Break, make sure to talk with your family about the importance of completing the 2020 Census. Remind them that you will be counted where you live most of the year which is in Tompkins County. Families should record all those who are living in their household on April 1 on their Census Form.
College students should be counted where they are living the majority of the year or where they are living on April 1 – the official Census count day.
Counting people where the live most of the year, using April 1 as a proxy date, helps to determine a number of important things including:
The number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives
Boundaries of Congressional and state legislative districts
Distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds in support of schools, hospitals, roads, public words and other vital programs.
For public safety and emergency preparedness.
To support community initiatives involving legislation, quality of life and consumer advocacy.
