“America Street” follows Joe, the owner of a small corner store at the heart of a disappearing Black community in Charleston, South Carolina, resisting the city’s mounting forces of gentrification and racial violence, including the police killing of Walter Scott. Since its filming in 2015, the documentary has become increasingly relevant, especially following this summer’s racial violence and protests.
As a West African immigrant and filmmaker, Mora-Kpai and this film offer unique insights to tackling race and racism in “a country that feels, in many ways, increasingly unwelcoming towards black bodies.”
