America Street follows Joe, the owner of a small corner store at the heart of a disappearing Black community in Charleston, South Carolina, resisting the city’s mounting forces of gentrification and racial violence, including the police killing of Walter Scott. Since its filming in 2015, the documentary has become increasingly relevant, especially following this summer’s racial violence and protests.

As a West African immigrant and filmmaker, Mora-Kpai and this film offer unique insights to tackling race and racism in “a country that feels, in many ways, increasingly unwelcoming towards black bodies.”

Speakers:

Idrissou Mora-Kpai, Assistant Professor at Ithaca College, Filmmaker

Reece Auguiste, Associate Professor of Critical Media Practices, University of Colorado, Boulder

Brett Bossard, Executive Director, Cinemapolis, Ithaca, NY

R.A. Judy, Professor of Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Pittsburgh

Janet Walker, Professor of Film and Media Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara

Moderated by Dr.  Patricia Zimmermann, Professor at Ithaca College, co-director of FLEFF
