Mailbox: Creative Donor George Curley '49 Sparks Memories

Before George Curley ’49 went to New York City to act in The Fantasticks, he starred in Rumpelstiltskin on tour with the Packit Players, formed by [the late] Margaret Itter ’42. We played children’s tales in schools in the eastern United States with compact sets designed by George Hoerner ’47, M.S. ’53, to be transported in a van that also compactly housed props, costumes, and actors. We had a fine time starting our theater careers living out of suitcases.

We were an acting company of six IC thespians: George, Gladys Beck (now Barnes) ’49, David Barnett ’50, Arlene Mann Barnett ’50, Danny Safford ’48, and me. None of us have kept in touch, but I have often thought of them. What a happy surprise to read of George in your 2007/2 issue (“Creative Donor,” page 3 of the paper version). Thank you.

Carl, are you the same guy who carved the sword for "Beauty and the Beast" and do you remember Margaret Itter's Godson? I often prompted the actors.
