At the next IC Diversity & Inclusion Discussion Circle, Dr. Sean Eversley-Bradwell will be leading a discussion on the first couple of chapters from the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This book discusses the connections between race and mass incarceration in the United States.

Alexander's central premise, from which the book derives its title, is that "mass incarceration is, metaphorically, the New Jim Crow.” Dr. Bradwell will discuss the historical connections between slavery and the rise of mass incarceration.

Please join us for discussion on Tuesday October 25th at noon in Klingenstein Lounge.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Jaimie Voorhees in the office of finance and administration (274-3118 or jvoorhees@ithaca.edu).  We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.

Thanks for engaging these issues Dr. Eversley-Bradwell! Would love to participate in this event but am limited these days by my recent major surgery. Nevertheless, just want to add some readings (balance) that serve as useful critique of Alexander's New Jim Crow metaphor as an explanation to mass incarceration today; and also reference the book's by-passing of any political economic/class explanatory factors, among others. Here are few pieces in the spirit of diversity & inclusion: https://libcom.org/news/new-jim-crow-discredited-advocates-demand-revision-03022013
