The Cancer Resource Center is hosting its 19th Walkathon and 5k Run at Cass Park on Saturday, October 26 at 10 a.m. (registration begins at 9 a.m.). A pancake breakfast will follow the race directly afterwards. Registration is $25 until the day before the walk.

 Storytellers from the Beehive Design Collective will be on campus to discuss how - through extensive community immersion in Central America - the Beehive is attempting to illustrate, document and share diverse stories of survival, community development, and collective action that calls into question the purpose and benefit of "Proyecto Mesoamerica."

What's happening with the Internet? It's changing so quickly it's hard to keep up. The same is true with the media in general. How do they affect our politics, and vice versa? What might their evolution mean for democracy in the United States?

In his latest book, Dollarocracy, cowritten with John Nichols, Robert W. McChesney discusses how, thanks to a 2010 Supreme Court decision, more than $10 billion was spent on the 2012 election campaign. Most of it came from (now legally) unidentified billionaires and corporations, and was given to media corporations to pay for vicious or "issues-free" advertising. Meanwhile, useful campaign coverage virtually disappeared from mainstream "news" media.

Also this year McChesney published Digital Disconnect, an exhaustive study based on 15 years of research into the Internet and media and their effect on democracy.

 The Ithacan has once again been named a national Newspaper Pacemaker Finalist by the Associated Collegiate Press. This is that organization’s top honor, commonly referred to as “the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism.” The award is for work produced during the 2012-13 academic year (Kelsey O'Connor, editor in chief).
The Ithacan is an Online Pacemaker Finalists as well. The winners of both awards will be announced at the fall National College Media Convention in New Orleans, October 24-27.
