Ithaca College has named Eric Lieb and Shira Sliffman recipients of the 2003 William A. Scoones Community Service Award. Presented on Friday, April 11, during the College's annual Celebration of Service reception held in the Emerson Suites, this $500 cash award celebrates Bill Scoones' lifetime example of service both to Ithaca College and the greater Ithaca community by recognizing two outstanding Ithaca College students for their distinguished community service efforts.
Criteria for the Scoones Community Service Award include having performed (without monetary compensation) individual or multiple acts of service which have positively impacted the Ithaca community. For consideration, students must have sustained community service exceeding normal expectations; demonstrated a commitment to the spirit of volunteerism as well as dedication to a specific cause; fostered a positive relationship between Ithaca College and the surrounding community; encouraged others to become involved in community service; and maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 while remaining in good judicial standing. Recipients were nominated by a member of the faculty or staff and then chosen, out of a pool of 24 applicants, by a selection committee which included a community representative. The 2003 recipients Eric Lieb '04 is majoring in television-radio, with a concentration in media management, at the Roy H. Park School of Communications. A Dean's List student, he was previously awarded the Student Government Association Scholarship. Founder of the organization Students for a Just Peace, he helped develop the curricula for "Making Sense of 9/11", a class which provided a venue for more than 200 students and 13 faculty members to discuss issues surrounding the tragedy in an academic setting. Having begun his commitment to volunteerism on campus as a first-year student with the Community Plunge Program, he was noted for his commitment to Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services including putting the finishing touches on a neighborhood playground project. While at Ithaca College, Lieb has also been active with the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity in addition to the Diversity Awareness Committee, Bias Related Incidents Task Force, Student Government Association, and Ithaca College Environmental Society. A graduate of Evanston Township High School, Lieb is a permanent resident of 8914 Bennett Ave., Evanston, IL. Shira Sliffman '03 is majoring in occupational science, leading to a master's degree in occupational therapy, at the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Co-director of the Community Service Network at Ithaca College, she made it a point to attend each and every service program that the network's five subcommittees organized. She also helped to make the Helping Hands Holiday Party and Running for A Wish 5K race annual events on campus. Sliffman regularly volunteers at the Longview senior residential facility, Ithaca Youth Bureau, and Northside Community Center. In her free time, she has spent innumerable hours assisting students, faculty, and staff with their own volunteer placements. Vice president of the Student Alumni Association, she has also been active with the Student Occupational Therapy Association, Hillel, and IC Dance Team. She was previously inducted this year into Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. A graduate of Quince Orchard High School, Sliffman is a permanent resident of 15210 Gravenstein Way, Gaithersburg, MD. Contributed by Kristin Hamill |
