Freshman composition major Robert Pierzak has just been announced as one of nine winners of a BMI young composers award for 2003. These awards are open to all undergraduate and graduate students in music in the western hemisphere, and are highly selective. Most of this year's other eight winners were graduate students enrolled at major conservatories throughout the country. The list of past winners includes a very high percentage of "major" composers and prize-winners, including several Pulitzer Prize recipients. Robert's winning work was a composition for cello and piano entitled Alone in the Night.
