The Nachi/Welchia worm has been detected on college-owned computers. Most college-owned computers should have been automatically patched and protected. However, if your college-owned computer displays a McAfee virus alert message regarding the Nachi worm, the computer is infected and MUST be patched and cleaned.

To do this, go to the Computer Protection Quick Guides and follow the simple instructions -- or stop by the main office of Information Technology Services (Muller 102) and pick up an "ITS Virus Tools IV CD" and follow the directions.

As a reminder, good computing practices include:

  • Shutting down your computer at night, so the next time it starts up, you will receive any new Windows patches.
  • Installing the new Windows patches with a click of the mouse button whenever you are prompted.
  • Logging into your Novell account (i.e., Memphis or Pulsar) to receive the latest virus definition files for the college-owned computer.

If you have any questions, you can contact the ITS liaison for your area or the ITS Helpdesk, 4-3282.
