The lecture, "Ecology and Politics: The Election of 2004," is free and open to the public. David Orr is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design. He raised funds for and led the effort to design and build a $7.2 million environmental studies center at Oberlin College, a building described by the New York Times as "the most remarkable" of a new generation of college buildings and selected as one of 30 "milestone buildings in the 20th century" by the U. S. Department of Energy. He is the author of three books -- The Nature of Design, Earth in Mind, and Ecological Literacy -- and coeditor of The Global Predicament and The Campus and Environmental Responsibility. He has published 120 articles in scientific journals, social science publications, and popular magazines. This special lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Environmental Studies Program, the Department of Organizational Communication, Learning, and Design, the Ithaca College Environmental Society, the Department of Anthropology, and EcoVillage at Ithaca.
