Ithaca College

Photographs of Ithaca College, taken over several decades by the late C. Hadley Smith, are now on display on the third floor of Job Hall. The photographs, which represent a sampling of his work for the College, form a tribute to Smith. The renowned photographer died January 5 at the age of 94 following a lengthy illness.

During his long association with the College, Smith documented the development and growth of Ithaca's South Hill campus. In addition, his photographs of notable Americans and other works of photojournalism appeared in many national publications such as Newsweek and Time, as well as newspapers throughout New York State.

Smith's photographic career began during World War II, when he served as a technical photographer responsible for recording tests of experimental aircraft. In 1947 Smith and his late wife Gertrude began their own commercial and illustrative photography business in Ithaca. Shortly thereafter he began his long association with Ithaca College. The Smiths operated their photography business until 1984.

C. Hadley Smith is survived by two children, Elizabeth O'Donnell of New Hampshire and Hadley Scott Smith of Ithaca, an assistant professor in the Ithaca College writing program.

The photographs by C. Hadley Smith will remain on display in Job Hall through mid March.
