Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, a documentary film on the controversial civil rights activist, will be shown on Monday, February 9, at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103. Part of the yearlong "Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen: Intersections of Sexuality and Culture in Film" series, Brother Outsider is being shown in February to celebrate Black History Month.

An openly gay black man, Rustin formulated many of the strategies of the civil rights movement. The organizer of the 1963 march on Washington, D.C., that culminated in Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Rustin was shunned because of his sexuality by the very movement he had so devoutly served. A chronicle of Rustin's complex life, Brother Outsider tells the story of how a man who was black and gay -- the ultimate outsider -- overcame the prejudices of his day to become a respected adviser to American presidents and foreign leaders.
