The Ithaca College Wind Ensemble will perform before a national audience at the American Bandmasters Association Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia, in March. Ithaca audiences will have a chance to hear a preview of that performance on Thursday, February 26. The free concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

Stephen Peterson will conduct a program that includes Karl King's "Samson March," a transcription of Morten Lauridsen's increasingly well-known choral work "O Magnum Mysterium," and "Shortcut Home" by Dana Wilson, the Charles A. Dana Professor of Music Theory, History, and Composition in the School of Music. Works by Kabalevsky, Gould, Gandolfi, and Sparke will complete the program.

At its Williamsburg performance the wind ensemble will be conducted by several notable conductors, including Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel, a 1950 graduate of the School of Music who went on to serve as commander/conductor of the internationally known United States Air Force Band, as well as the air force's symphony orchestra. Gabriel is a three-time recipient of the Legion of Merit, the nation's highest peacetime honor. In 1997 he was awarded the Ithaca College Alumni Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to the wind ensemble, the other groups chosen to perform at the ABA convention are the United States Army Band, "Pershing's Own"; Lake Braddock Symphonic Band; Virginia Wind Symphony; and Virginia Commonwealth University Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Founded in 1929, the American Bandmasters Association promotes an increasingly higher standard of artistic excellence for the concert band and a constantly greater contribution through the concert band to the musical life and culture of all people.

The Ithaca College School of Music offers some 300 free concerts each academic year. More information on these performances is available by calling (607) 274-3356 or visiting the concert calendar at www.ithaca.edu/concerts.
