Michelle Parkerson will visit Ithaca College to screen and discuss her film, A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde, on Thursday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Park Auditorium. She will also lead a master class on Friday, February 27, at 11:00 a.m. in Park 140.

Lorde published her first volume of poetry in 1968. Over the decades that followed she produced seven more books of poetry, as well as numerous essays and articles. Describing herself as a "poet, lover, mother, and warrior," she inspired a generation of activists struggling against injustices based on gender, sexual orientation, and race.

Parkerson's film is both a celebration of Lorde's life and an examination of the forces that shaped her. A writer, filmmaker, university lecturer, and performance artist who is herself black and lesbian, Parkerson adds Litany for Survival to a growing list of accomplishments. Two of her films -- Gotta Make this Journey: Sweet Honey in the Rock and But Then, She's Betty Carter -- have been broadcast on PBS, BET, and the Learning Channel. Parkerson's work has also been screened at the Sundance and Berlin International Film Festivals. She is currently an assistant professor of film and media arts at Temple University.

Part of the celebration of Black History Month at Ithaca College, Parkerson's visit is sponsored by the Department of Cinema and Photography and co-sponsored by the OMA LGBT Center for Education, Outreach, and Services.
