Math Awareness Month Event April 8

Contributed by Dani Novak on 04/01/04

April is Math Awareness Month and the theme for this year is "Networks."

To celebrate, IC invited a prominent speaker from Cornell, Rick Durrett, to deliver a lecture about random networks on Thursday, April 8, at 4:00 p.m. in Williams 310.

Networks are all around us and inside us: the Internet, our fragile electrical power grid, food webs, metabolic pathways, and the movie actor network with its "six degrees of separation." The talk will discuss three models of random networks created by Erdos and Renyi, Strogatz and Watts, and Barbasi, and relate their properties to those of real networks.
