The Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jeffrey Grogan, will present its final concert of the year on Monday, April 26.
The free concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. The major work on the program will be Rachmaninoff's Symphony no. 2 in E minor. Other selections will include high school piano competition winner Keiji Ishiguir performing the opening movement of Grieg's piano concerto and Frank Campos playing the trumpet solo Prayer, a work by Dana Wilson. Also on the program is Music from the Redneck Songbook, a work the orchestra commissioned from Scott McAllister, composer in residence at Baylor University. The piece includes musical depictions of poisonous snakes being used in church services, a deadly tree fungus that affects the oaks in the South, and the sound of distant trains. The score includes instruments not usually found in an orchestra such as mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, and hammered dulcimer. Contributed by Erik Kibelsbeck |
