Joel Savishinsky published an essay entitled "'Bread and Butter' Issues: Food, Conflict, and Control in a Nursing Home," in a volume Gray Areas: Ethnographic Encounters with Nursing Home Culture (edited by Philip Stafford. Santa Fe, NM: School of American Research).

This book was the result of a week-long, intensive seminar held at the School for American Research. The seminar brought together anthropologists who had done qualitative research on the nature of life and work in American geriatric facilities, and includes a set of recommendations for improving the quality of care and work in these settings. Savishinsky's work was supported, in part, by funding from the College's Gerontology Institute, the Dana Professorship, and the Center for Faculty Research and Development.
