Summer is a time of relaxing and enjoyment, but also a very difficult time for hospital patients. Blood supplies are at their lowest levels and everyone's busy schedules result in fewer donations. That's why I am asking for your help.
The American Red Cross is going to make a special offer that magnifies the significance of your generosity to take the time out of your busy summer life to donate blood. As part of their 2004 Summer of Wishes Campaign, the Red Cross has partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and will donate $1.00 for every unit of blood collected at any drive between Memorial Day and Labor Day. So not only will you be helping to prevent a serious blood shortage, you will be helping to make a wish come true for a deserving child.
Some things cannot be manufactured, that's why giving blood is such an important aspect of being a lifelong donor. Every blood donation is essential. Ninety-five percent of the population can't give blood, but 85 percent will need blood transfusions. Those who can are desperately needed.
Please take the time out of your busy summer schedule to give blood Thursday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Emerson Suites. Your one donation will help up to three hospital patients and one deserving children who needs our help.
You are eligible to donate if you meet the following criteria:
- Are at least 17 years old
- Weight at least 110 pounds
- Have not donated within the last 56 days
- Have not traveled abroad since 1980 for more then three cumulative months in Great Britain or six months cumulative in Europe.
If you have an hour to spare and would like to be a local hero, please e-mail
csmith@ithaca.edu or call 274-3371 to schedule an appointment.
I am also looking for volunteers to help staff the blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thank you in advance for your goodwill and generosity.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DONATION:
To improve your donation experience, be sure to eat well the day of donation, drink plenty of fluids, and get a good night's sleep!
