Richard Buchanan will present a Sustainability Café during his visit to campus on Thursday, October 21.
The Sustainability Café will be held in Park Hall 277 from 12:10-1:05 pm. Bring a brown bag lunch; light refreshments will be provided.
Buchanan will present "Design as Inquiry: The Problem of Ecology and Sustainability". The "crisis of sustainability" took initial shape through the convergence of scientific studies and political goals. But the problem of sustainability has not been fully formed and developed in our understanding.
The goal of this workshop is to recast the issues of sustainability from a design perspective, demonstrating how a new view of design as inquiry may help the human community focus its thought and action.
This event is cosponsored by the Department of Organizational Communication, Learning and Design. The Sustainability Café series is held in conjunction with the Faculty Colloquium series.
Buchanan will also deliver a lecture at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 21, in Williams Hall 225, entitled "Design, Systems, and Organizational Change".
Richard Buchanan is professor of design and former head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. His work focuses on the theory and practice of design and the application of design thinking to new areas of professional practice. He teaches courses in information and communication design, industrial design, interaction design, and the design of human and cultural systems. He is an editor of Design Issues, an international journal of design history, theory, and criticism published by the MIT Press. He is also president of the Design Research Society, an international learned society founded in the United Kingdom and serving a multidisciplinary network of design researchers in 35 countries. Professor Buchanan received his A.B. and Ph.D. from the Committee on the Analysis of Ideas and the Study of Methods at the University of Chicago.
