Media activist legend Dee Dee Halleck will present a special workshop on Tuesday, October 19, 2:35-4:00 pm, entitled "Escalation: Indy Media and the War in Iraq." The workshop is in Park 285.

Halleck will screen excerpts from the new Deep Dish TV network's seven-hour DVD project on the Iraq war called Shocking and Awful: A Grassroots Response to War and Occupation. She will also discuss the recent FBI initiated seizures of some indymedia.org servers in Europe, which occurred one week ago.

Cofounder of Paper Tiger Television and Deep Dish TV, Halleck has been organizing for independent media since the 1960s. She is a major voice and advocate for democratizing media and employing new technologies to increase access. She has done workshops all over the globe on these issues.

Halleck is professor emerita of the Department of Communication at University of California San Diego. She has served as president of the Association of Independent Film and Video in the 1970s, where she propelled major policy changes in grant and government funding as well as public broadcasting that helped to stimulate a more diverse media ecology in the United States.

Halleck has also served on the boards of the American Film Institute, Women Make Movies, and Instructional Telecommunications Quarterly. A prolific writer for Film Culture, Afterimage, Leonardo, High Performance, and other publications, Halleck is the author of Hand Held Visions: The Impossible Possibilities of Community Media (Fordham University Press, 2001).

Halleck's workshop is supported through the generosity of the Central New York Programmers Group which is funded through a special grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, as well as the IC Department of Cinema and Photography.
