The Ithaca-based new music group Ensemble X will give a free concert in the Hockett Family Recital Hall on Wednesday, November 3, at 8:15.
Chris Younghoon Kim will conduct, and Judith Kellock will be the soprano soloist. Music of Lang, Hillborg, Godfrey, Nancarrow, and Turnage is on the program, much of it in premiere or regional premiere performances. Xak Bjerken and Steven Stucky are the ensemble's artistic directors.
Many of the performers are IC School of Music faculty, including percussionists Gordon Stout and Conrad Alexander, violinists Rebecca Ansel and Susan Waterbury, trumpeter Frank Campos, clarinetist Richard Faria, pianist Read Gainsford, bassoonist Lee Goodhew, cellists Heidi Hoffman and Elizabeth Simkin, saxophonist Steven Mauk, flutist Wendy Mehne, violist Debra Moree, oboist Paige Morgan, hornist Alex Shuhan. Other members are from the Cornell community and some are Ithaca College School of Music students.
Ensemble X was founded in 1997 by a group of performers who share a passionate commitment to new music. The ensemble's mission is to perform both very new music of the "classical" tradition -- typically music written within the past five to ten years -- and established works from earlier in the 20th century. The group performs a series of concerts each season in Ithaca as well as touring and recording.
