Tonight, Monday, November 1, at 7:00 p.m. in room 112 Center for Natural Sciences, Maura Stephens, a member of the TheocracyWatch speakers bureau, will give a presentation with slides on the rise of radical dominion theology in the U.S. government.
"Faith can be a wonderful thing," says Stephens, "but religious extremism is something altogether different. Many people of faith are shocked to learn just how deeply the radical religious right has penetrated our government -- in all three branches. We are just a few small steps away from becoming a theocracy. People have reason to be worried."
Stephens is also the vice president of TheocracyWatch, a project of the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy (CRESP) at Cornell University. In the talk, developed by TheocracyWatch executive director Joan Bokaer, she will discuss the movement that seeks to bring an end to the separation of church and state and to replace the U.S. Constitution with biblical law. She will explain how the leaders of this well-funded, carefully planned movement reject democracy, pluralism, and tolerance in favor of an ideology of dominion over all people and the Earth itself.
This talk connects the dots between dominionist philosophy and the actual implementation of related policies over the last four years. The presentation includes PowerPoint slides and time for a question-and-answer session.
