Emmy Award-winning journalist Al Tompkins will speak to the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in a public lecture at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 30, in Klingenstein Lounge.
Tompkins is group leader of broadcast and online media for the Poynter Institute, one of the nation's leading journalism training organizations. The speech is free, and the public is invited. The title of his presentation is "Tough Calls on Deadlines: Making Ethical Decisions."
Tompkins joined Poynter in 1998 after 25 years as a journalist, including serving as a reporter, investigative reporter, director of special projects and investigations, and then news director of WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee.
Tompkins writes Al's Morning Meeting column, a daily story-idea service read by more than 8,000 people daily.
He is the author of Aim for the Heart, a book for reporters, producers and photojournalists. He also is coauthor of the Radio and Television News Director Foundation's Newsroom Ethics workbook and tape series.
Tompkins has been awarded some of broadcast journalism's highest awards: The National Emmy, seven National Headliner awards, the Peabody (team award), the Iris, three Gabriel awards, the Japan Prize and the Clarion Award for investigative, documentary, and public service reporting.
