Provost Peter Bardaglio's commentary "Sustainability Education, the ANAC Mission, and Democratic Citizenship" has been published in the fall 2004 ANAC Bulletin, the online newsletter of the Associated New American Colleges.
The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has announced a new initiative, in conjunction with University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (USLF), on education for sustainable development. This initiative will be officially kicked off at the annual meeting of AAC&U in San Francisco in January, which is when the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development begins. As part of the kick-off, David Orr, director of environmental studies at Oberlin College, and Leith Sharp, director of the green campus initiative at Harvard, are speaking at a plenary session on sustainability and democratic responsibility. There will also be an open discussion on higher education and sustainability facilitated by senior leaders from AAC&U and ULSF, aimed at mapping out next steps.
AAC&U is highlighting Ithaca College in another session on "Educating for Sustainability" at the conference. Susan Allen-Gil from biology, Liz Walker from EcoVillage, and Peter Bardaglio are going to discuss the IC sustainability initiative and our outreach to the community through EcoVillage and Sustainable Tompkins.
