Larry Hajime Shinagawa, is this year's recipient of the Marjorie N. Penalver Award from the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission.

The honor goes to an individual educator who has done the most in the area of human rights through work increasing awareness of human rights, diversity, and/or issues of oppression within Tompkins County. Shinagawa is an associate professor of sociology and the director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity at Ithaca College.

Shinagawa will be honored at the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission's 23rd annual awards dinner on Friday, December 10. The theme of this year's dinner is "A School House Divided: Not Standing for Institutional Racism and Violence in Our Schools."
