Tonya Gregg: Exuberant Boom opens at the Handwerker Gallery on January 27 and remains on view through February 27. The 39 paintings on display offer, for the first time, a retrospective look at Gregg's development as an artist. An assistant professor of art at Benedict College, Gregg has exhibited her paintings widely in solo, juried, and group shows, both nationally and internationally.

Labeling herself as a member of a "new generation of black artists emerging with a vision and voice," Gregg paints primarily in series, through which she explores African American identity within American culture and gender roles, resulting in personal and social perspectives on race, class, and sexuality.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, February 3, 5:00-7:00 pm, with an artist's talk at 6:00 pm. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday until 9:00 p.m.; Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public.

This event is cosponsored by the Ithaca College African-Latino society. For further information please contact Cheryl Kramer, 607-274-3548, or consult the gallery's website
