The Illinois State University Wind Symphony will give a free concert in Ford Hall at Ithaca College on Wednesday, March 16, at 8:15 pm. The program will include Cycles by Samuel Zyman and Matthew Halper's Concerto for Flute and Wind Ensemble. The concerto is an expansive, dramatic work that covers a wide musical terrain in a single movement. The balance of the program is David Maslanka's Symphony No. 7, which evokes the feeling of American folk songs without actually quoting any. The wind symphony, which was founded in the spring of 1988 by Steele, enjoys a national reputation of excellence and a proud performance history with visiting artists, conductors, and composers. Many heartfelt performances of astounding compositions have led to the release of two critically acclaimed recordings through Albany Records. The release of three more CDs, including the complete works of John Barnes Chance, is planned for the coming year. |
