The Ithaca College Symphonic Band will perform Johan de Meij's symphony based on J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books on Thursday, March 31, at 8:15 pm in Ford Hall. Henry Neubert will conduct.

De Meij's work pre-dates the recent film version directed by Peter Jackson, with music by Howard Shore. The 40-minute work is in five sections, depicting the characters Gandalf, Gollum, and hobbits, and the locations Lothlorien and the "Journey in the Dark."

Neubert will retire from a long and distinguished career as conductor of the Symphonic Band at the end of this year. His final concert with the band will be Saturday, April 23, at 8:15 in Ford Hall.
