The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected Michael Smith,
assistant professor of history, to join 20 other academicians from around the world in the Carnegie
Scholars Program for 2005-2006. Administered by the Carnegie Foundation, the program seeks to
bring together educators who are developing new models for teaching.

Smith was selected for his work using service learning to enhance history education in several different courses. His project will focus on refining the service learning components in some courses, developing new service learning partnerships for his environmental history course, and creating tools for measuring the kinds of learning produced through service learning. Smith hopes his redesigned environmental history course will contribute to higher levels of ecological literacy in IC students.
