The Ithaca College Department of Sociology proudly presents our 2005 Mental Health Speaker, Gunner Scott, speaking on "Beyond the Gender Binary System: Including Transgender and Intersex Communities in the Social Services."

An interactive workshop, breakfast, and book signing with Gunner Scott will take place on Wednesday, March 30, 9:00-11:00 am, in the Klingenstein Lounge, Campus Center. Breakfast will be available at 8:30 am.

How can we build connections across all communities, and provide appropriate and respectful services?

Public restrooms, shelters, child custody systems, prisons, and other legal, social, and cultural institutions are strongly influenced by the "gender binary" system. This workshop will look at the direct and indirect barriers genderqueer, transgender, and gender variant people face when accessing outside support, and the resources that are available. Gunner Scott is the organizer/outreach coordinator for the Network/La Red: Ending abuse in lesbian, bisexual women, and transgender communities. He is a national trainer on LGBT partner abuse/sexual violence, and transgender issues. He also has nearly 15 years' experience as a counselor, outreach worker, and activist in mental health, addiction treatment, and HIV/AIDS.

Gunner Scott is also the author of the introduction to the book Pinned Down by Pronouns, a 2003 Lambda Literary nominee anthology published by Conviction Books. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.

Advance registration is preferred by Monday, March 28, but walk-ins are also welcome. Contact Sarah Rubenstein-Gillis, 274-3834.
