Ithaca College

Hank Roberts, who has been called the Jimi Hendrix of the cello, will premiere a solo chamber music performance titled "Music from Occupied Lands" as part of the inaugural Occupied Spaces Symposium at 6:45 p.m., Friday, April 8, at the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College.

Roberts, whose approach to writing and performing music embraces a wide range of musical styles from Afrocentric music to lyrical folk-rock to R&B and classical, uses the cross-cultural, soul-language dance with the cello and voice to express ideas.

Roberts has played and recorded with Bill Frisell, John Brown's Body, Sim Redmond Band, Plastic Nebraska, Andy Summers, David Sanborn, the Second Hand, Jenny Stearns, Tiger Okoshi, Mer Boel, Arcado String Trio, Cologne Radio Orchestra, Ti-Ti Chickapea with Richie Stearns and Eric Aceto, Arcado String Trio, Chiron Performing Arts Ensemble, Martin Simpson, Tim Berne, Joey Baron, Peter Dodge, Burns Sisters, Johnny Dowd, and Kevin Kinsella.

The Occupied Spaces Symposium will feature a series of talks, research presentations, panels, and performances dealing with gender, race, geography, and symbolic occupations nationally and internationally.
