The Ithaca College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team returned to Ithaca as winners after participating in the Valley Forge, PA, SIFE USA regional competition on April 12, 2005. The event was one of 21 SIFE USA regional competitions being held across the United States in April.

At competition, Ithaca College SIFE’s team earned the title of regional champions and will advance to national competition May 22-24 in Kansas City, MO.

Stephanie Hunt, president of IC SIFE stated, “I am incredibly proud of our team, not only because of our outstanding presentation at competition, but in the number of projects we performed having a positive effect on small communities.”

SIFE is an international nonprofit organization active on over 1,800 university campuses in more than 40 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics. Their projects are judged at competition on creativity, innovation, and effectiveness.

During this academic year, the Ithaca College SIFE team organized 12 projects in the Ithaca community and beyond, including teaching high school students the importance of acting in an ethical and socially responsible manner through the application of a mock trial. Students served as defense, prosecution, and jury and tried a student for stealing $10 from an ATM.

IC SIFE has also formed partnerships with local agencies like the Women's Opportunity Center in downtown Ithaca to teach classes about managing personal finances and starting a small at-home business. These classes will be held May 5 at the Women's Opportunity Center with "Money Matters" taught from 2:00-4:00 pm and "Tips to Managing and Starting Your Own Small Business" 5:00-7:00 pm.

SIFE is an international nonprofit organization that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunity for others while discovering their own potential.
