College Mourns Loss of Valued Employee

It is with a great deal of sorrow that I must inform the campus community of the death of Pearla Monroe.

Pearla served as a facilities attendant, in the physical plant department, since she joined the College in October 1988. She worked in a number of different academic and administrative buildings during her almost 17-year career. Pearla took a great deal of pride in the work she did and we valued her contributions.

Please keep Pearla's family in your prayers during this difficult time. She will be missed by all of us.

I was saddened to hear of Perla's passing. I met Pearla nearly 13 years ago when I worked in the Science building and she was always a friendly, hard-working, caring person. My synpathies go out to all of her children--she cared so deeply about them and her love for them was powerful. I'll miss you Pearla Dawn.

My Dearest Pearla, I will never forget my first day on the job three years ago. You and Donnie took me out on the campus center roof for 9 oclock break. I was scared I was going to be seen sitting down. You looked right in my eyes and said, slow down kid; have a smoke an look around, we have a busy day ahead of us. After we talked a bit, I felt more relaxed. I remember you saying Donnie works in the music building, ask him questions, he knows were the drum rooms are, and the piano studios. Then you said give em hell kid, and dont be a stranger.The next day I was transfered up to the towers. Almost like you knew I was going to be working in a different area. Pearla, you were the first person at Ithaca college that helped me.

I will miss Pearla greatly. I first started out working with Pearla in the Science bldg. many years ago. After having just completed my tenth year here, Pearla taught me many lessons that I have not forgotten. I talked with Pearla just two weeks ago, on her birthday, I knew she wasn't doing well. She wouldn't ever admit that she wasn't going to be able to see her next birthday. Not only did she keep her family together, through good times and bad, but kept her extended family here at IC going strong too.
On Mother's day this year, please remember Pearla.
I will be joining the IC relay for life this year in rememberance of her, and others in the Physical Plant that have lost their life to cancer.
