As you may be aware, the U.S. Congress has been working on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) for nearly two years. We have learned that Congress anticipates finishing their work on the HEA very soon, and your voice is important.
The HEA is undeniably the decade's single most important piece of higher education legislation. This important legislation governs many aspects of higher education funding, specifically financial aid/access programs. As our legislative leaders determine the final priorities, and which programs will be funded or curtailed, members of the IC community are encouraged to learn more about specific areas that are important to our students (Pell grants, Stafford and Perkins loans, etc.) and to voice your thoughts with your elected leaders.
Faculty and staff are especially urged to ask your Congressional representatives to act affirmatively for programs that support student access and attendance. It is our hope that they will raise the Pell grant maximum awards, renew funding for the Perkins loan program, and increase limits on guaranteed Stafford loans.
Please take a few minutes and contact your member of Congress by telephone, letter, or email. For specific information on issues related to the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act and/or to learn how to contact your representative, please visit the website of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities at www.naicu.edu. As a resident of New York, you may also visit the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities at www.cicu.org.
It is important to make your voice known as these critical decisions are made in the very near future. Please contact Michael McGreevey, executive assistant to the president, with any questions.
