Ithaca College has been granted provisional status as an observing non-governmental organization to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Montreal, Canada, from November 28 to December 9, 2005.

A one-credit Block II course has been developed around the delegation's participation in this international event. Students interested in becoming delegates to represent Ithaca College at this Framework Convention are invited to register for this interdisciplinary one-credit course, which will be team-taught by faculty from biology; politics; organizational communication, learning, and design; and business.

The course will involve attendance at and participation in this first meeting of the parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The purpose of the parties meeting is to track progress toward implementing the treaty and to formulate next steps toward future agreements. The delegation will attend only 3 or 4 days of the conference; actual dates to be determined.

In advance of the trip, students will participate in two preparatory meetings. The first meeting, on Monday, September 26, will deal with logistical matters. During the second meeting (date to be advised), the participating faculty members will prepare students with a greater understanding of the substantive social and scientific issues related to global warming.

The maximum course enrollment is 10 students. Travel costs for student delegates will be mostly funded by the College.

The first meeting of the delegation will take place on Monday, September 26 at 4:00 p.m. in the Clark Lounge in the Campus Center. Students interested but unable to attend that session should contact Tom Shevory, Department of Politics, 315 Muller Center, 274-1347, or shevory@ithaca.edu.
