Enchantments of Technology book

Contributed by Lee Bailey on 09/18/05

Lee Bailey, Dept. Philosophy and Religion (on sabbatic) just published a book "The Enchantments of Technology," about the imaginative and spiritual dimensions of technology.

He discusses the way that android robots are enactments of the Pinocchio folktale, symbolizing the desire to bring machines to life. He also explores the spiritual search for ultimate meaning in space travel, the madness of the lust for speed, the dangerous shadows of triumphal, utopian visions in technological culture, and the archetypal way that mythic themes are embodied in soul-in-the-world in technologies, as distinct from a subject-object metaphysic. The book is published by the University of Illinois Press.
