Intercom Tips and Reminders

Contributed by Joanne Hindman on 09/30/05

Occasionally we notice new ways that you’re using Intercom, and therefore offer tips and reminders for submitting stories and finding news in it. We also continue to enhance Intercom with new features or topics. Here are the latest.

Story Submissions and Photos

If you’re having trouble submitting a story, take a little time to read the instructions and the help topics. Make sure you’re logged in and go to the “contribute and manage a story” page. From there, choose from the pull-down menu the topic in which you want your story to appear. Add a story title and the intro and body text.

If you want to add an image, the feature at the bottom of the page allows you to do so. Click on “browse” and choose the image from your desktop or computer file. Your photo will be resized and placed to the right of your intro copy when the story is published.

Then, if your story is in a direct-submit topic, submit the story by selecting “save” just under the “draft” checkbox. And don’t forget to uncheck the “draft” box. The story will be posted immediately. If your story is in a submit-to-manager topic, select the “submit to moderator” button at the bottom of the form. We’ll receive a notice of the submission and post it as soon as possible.

Letters

Please remember that the “Letters” topic is for opinions. If you have information about your student organization, it needs to be posted to the “Student Organizations” topic. However, if it is information for the whole campus, have your faculty or staff adviser post it to the appropriate topic.

New Katrina Topic

We just added a new topic for stories about the campus’s Katrina relief efforts. This topic is linked from the College’s main page on the Katrina response, which includes an automatic feed from the Intercom topic. Faculty, staff, and students can submit stories to this topic, which means any submission to this topic in Intercom will automatically update the main Katrina response page.

Carpooling

Don’t forget our topic on carpooling! Those of you who are looking for rides to share to and from the College and those of you willing to offer rides to and from the College can now meet interactively through the “Carpooling” topic of Intercom. And remember to log in to read it.

And don't forget that you can always reach us by sending an e-mail to intercom@ithaca.edu.
