Cited by the New York Times Magazine as one of America's most influential conservative thinkers, author Dinesh D'Souza will explain "What's So Great About America" in a talk at Ithaca College on Monday, October 3. His presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Textor 103. It is sponsored by the Ithaca College Republicans (ICR).
The topic of D'Souza's speech is also the title of his 2002 book, which this year's Commencement speaker, Ben Stein, called, "convincing, eye-opening, and ultimately uplifting." Other books by D'Souza include Illiberal Education: The Politics of Race and Sex on Campus, one of the first works to highlight the issue of political correctness on college campuses; The End of Racism; and Letters to a Young Conservative.
D'Souza left his native India at the age of 17 as part of an educational exchange program. He later attended Dartmouth College as an English major, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1983. He was the managing editor of the journal Policy Review from 1985 to 1987, then served for one year as a senior policy analyst in the Reagan administration. He is currently the Robert and Karen Rishwain Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
"In the past, ICR has brought many different conservative speakers to Ithaca College so opinions and views the College community is less exposed to could be expressed," says Erik Daisey, chairman of ICR. "We believe this event will help foster more ideological diversity, and hope that those who prescribe to a host of political and ideological denominations will attend so a well-rounded discussion can follow Mr. D'Souza's speech."
