Distinguished Visiting Writers

For the School of Humanities and Sciences, the Department of Writing
offers two readings by this fall's Distinguished Visiting Writers.

Madison Smartt Bell will give a fiction reading on Tuesday, October 25,
at 7:30 p.m. in the Clark Lounge of Egbert Union. Elizabeth Spires will
give a poetry reading on Thursday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson
Suite A of Egbert Union.

Madison Smartt Bell is the author of 11 novels, including THE STONE
THAT THE BUILDER REFUSED (2004), ANYTHING GOES (2002), ALL SOULS RISING
(1995 National Book Award finalist), and SOLDIER'S JOY (1989 recipient
of the Lillian Smith Book Award). He is currently the director of the
Kratz Center for Creative Writing at Goucher College.

Elizabeth Spires is the author of five collections of poetry, including
GLOBE, SWAN'S ISLAND, and NOW THE GREEN BLADE RISES. The recipient of
a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers' Award, and the Witter
Bynner Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, she is a
professor of English at Goucher College.

Both of these events are free and open to the public. Books by these
renowned authors will be available for purchase and autographing. For
