The computer science department is pleased to announce the publication of Learning to Program with Alice, authored by Wanda Dann, Stephen Cooper, and Randy Pausch. Dr. Dann is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ithaca College. The textbook and software, Alice, are designed for use in introductory programming courses. The Alice software (available at www.alice.org) is a 3D interactive, animation programming environment. The text blends traditional problem-solving techniques with Pixar-style storyboarding design and animation techniques. This approach has been tested in three NSF grant projects, in which Dr. Dann is co-PI. Results of this testing have shown significantly improved student motivation and reduced attrition. Further information regarding the text and supporting instructional materials can be found at www.aliceprogramming.net.
