Ithaca College

The Ithacan has been awarded the Associated Collegiate Press' Pacemaker Award, often referred to as "the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism." The award, which is presented for overall excellence, is arguably the most prestigious student journalism award in the country.

It was presented at the National College Media Convention in Kansas City on October 29. The award was for papers from the 2004-05 academic year. Anne K. Walters, who has since graduated and is now an intern at the Chronicle of Higher Education, was the editor.

The paper also won fourth place in the convention’s Best of Show competition, and sophomore journalism and politics major Chris Baxter won second place for Best News Story in the ACP’s national Story of the Year competition.

The Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation have co-sponsored the Newspaper Pacemaker competition since 1971. ACP began the awards in 1927. Judges select Pacemakers based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.
