After many years of streaming through Real Player, VIC has stepped up to
become part of World's largest internet radio network, LIVE365.com
Ithaca College's web-based radio station, VIC, announces its
switch to live 365.com as its Internet streaming provider. On October 4,
2005, VIC joined thousands of other stations on Live365, which boasts 2.6
million listeners a month and offers high quality music streaming. All
that is required is a computer and an Internet connection to get all that
Live365 has to offer, including Ithaca's own VIC radio.
VIC started out as an AM carrier-current station in 1957 when the campus
was located in downtown Ithaca, and used the call letters WICB-AM. The
station began FM cable transmission in the 1970's, becoming WVIC (The
Voice of Ithaca College) and adopted the name 106-VIC in 1985. VIC began
Internet streaming in 1997 using RealPlayer technology. Since then,
listeners from around the globe have been able to hear diverse programming
and little known bands, thanks to VIC.
And now, thanks to Live365.com, even more listeners will get their music,
with an increased capacity enabling up to 125 simultaneous listeners.
Listeners with a fast Internet connection can listen at 64k, which is
close to CD quality. Those with a dial-up connection can still listen,
with slightly lower quality at 24k.
